Daffodil Drift
Daffodil Drift
gouache on embossed paper with image transfer
5”x7”, 2021
Starting in mid-February, daffodils start appearing in my neighborhood in northern California. In subsequent weeks, a yellow army of flowers storm the area, crowding embankments and marching along streets. I had been working with images of Peace roses for a few months when the daffodils arrived and stole the show. There are still roses and daffodils all over the walls of my studio, but this first batch of this body of work is ready to be unfurled.
I began these with photographs of the flowers, which I manipulated, printed and transferred to the paper. Then, the layering began: collaged pieces of drypoint prints, stenciled patterns in modeling paste, embossing the paper using lasercut blocks of patterns, sprayed ink. I missed the feel of a brush in my hand, so I found gouache to be an especially satisfying finish for most of these. And, when I felt stuck, I made minis: the 5”x7” pieces where I let go and try all the ideas without worry. The works range from 18”x24” to 5”x7”; the images below are partial thumbnails. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
